Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 1 Peter 1:21-22
Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God. Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart.

Thought for the Day: Yesterday, I wrote about trust. Yesterday afternoon, I had a living experience where the inability to trust caused difficulty. Now it would be a challenge to fully explain the situation without diagramming it, but here’s the condensed version: I was wanting to make a left turn off a busy street. I was waiting in the turn lane, and someone to my right on a sides street was attempting to make a left turn that would require him/her to cross my path. Of course, the rules of the road required me to wait for an opening in oncoming traffic, but the person waiting to turn onto the busy road in front of me would be required to wait until I had turned. That is not what occurred. S/he cut me off. Now it was good that on many occasions in the last few years, I have had that very thing happen. I have grown to expect it and I no longer trust people to play by the very simple rules of the road. And though defensive driving teaches a person to be aware of other drivers, to constantly ask whether someone is going to break the rules slows the whole flow of traffic. Some basic trust allows for life on the road to move along at a good clip. Basic trust in a family allows for the family to move forward in a healthy manner. Basic trust in a church allows for the community to move forward faithfully. There is always going to be someone who makes a mistake or isn’t paying attention, but as long as they are the exception to the rule, it will be the communities of trust who are better able to achieve their goals. So…with that said, please don’t cut me off in traffic. 🙂

Prayer: Teach me to be a more trustworthy person, Lord God, for the sake of presenting your Gospel in a respectful and reliable way. Amen.
