Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 2nd Thessalonians 2:4
He is the opponent of every so-called god or object of worship and promotes himself over them. So he sits in God’s temple, displaying himself to show that he is God.

Thought for the Day: The writer of this passage is speaking to a very specific situation, but those words have always challenged me to ask, “What have I helped to put on display in the temple of God that is not of God?” Whether it is a physical object or an attitude, there are too many things that find their way into the church. There are many things/people/attitudes that are not of God who claim to be God. It is not only distracting but destructive. Now let me say, we want all people to feel welcome within the church, and we want them to bring all their struggles, insecurities and sin. But let us not put these individuals or their issues on a pedestal and call it God. To some people’s ears, that might sound a bit odd, yet it happens far too often.

Prayer: It is you, O Lord of Grace and Mercy, that we seek. As other things might look enticing and worthy of our exaltation, let us continue to ask: Does it reflect the humility, generosity, mercy and love revealed in Jesus? When it does not, invite us to reengage the Jesus who gave fully of himself for humanity. Amen.
