Scripture: Exodus 34:4-7a
So Moses cut two stone tablets like the first ones. He got up early in the morning and climbed up Mount Sinai, just as the LORD had commanded him. He carried the two stone tablets in his hands. The LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him, and proclaimed the name, “The LORD.” The LORD passed in front of him and proclaimed: “The LORD! The LORD! a God who is compassionate and merciful, very patient, full of great loyalty and faithfulness, showing great loyalty to a thousand generations, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion…
Thought for the Day: In this story from Israel’s history, it is the second time around for Commandments to be etched upon two tablets. It is a key moment, for not only does God clearly set forth the essence of the Divine Nature, but assumed within those words is also an expectation that will be spelled out in the verses the follow. Faithfulness, mercy, kindness and compassion seen within God are to be replicated in those who accept the gifts. It is a covenant, a promise-based relationship, where God sets the expectations by example.
As most of you know, I was on vacation for 10 days. While I was gone and then immediately upon my return, something occurred that I’m sure many of you noticed. Paula and Joel offered amazing sermons on the two Sundays I was gone, and then yesterday afternoon, they provided leadership for a beautiful funeral service. Twenty-five years ago, I doubt either one of them would have seen themselves doing what they have done in the last couple of weeks. Yet let me suggest that they are simply finding a way of replicating the gifts they have received in faith. The LORD is faithful and kind, merciful and compassionate. In the way Paula and Joel offered of themselves, both in Sunday’s services and the funeral, it sure appeared as if they were doing their best to replicate what they had received. Thanks to both of them!
Prayer: Your generosity, O Lord, has set for us an amazing example. Give us the strength to follow your lead. Amen.
