Scripture: Luke 17:1-2
Jesus said to his disciples, “Occasions for stumbling are bound to come, but woe to anyone by whom they come! It would be better for you if a millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea than for you to cause one of these little ones to stumble.
Thought for the Day: Yesterday morning I was out for a run in my neighborhood. As I came around the corner, I had to make a quick adjustment to my gait when I noticed an old rusty one inch socket from a ratchet set. Had I stepped on it I’m pretty sure I would not be currently walking. It would have been a perfect disaster. As I continued on my run, I felt pretty good at my ability to avoid disaster, but about 50 yards down the road it hit me – what if the next runner is not looking? What happens if a group of kids are out playing and one steps on it. The combination of guilt and pity kicked in and I turned around to pick up the socket from the road. It got me to thinking about all the times I have felt overly good about my ability to avoid a stumble (physical, emotional, spiritual) only to allow my arrogance to forget about those who might follow. Let us be aware enough of the obstacles and potential pitfalls for both ourselves and the community that might follow. For even one to stumble is too many if it could have been avoided.
Prayer: Let me seek the goal of your kingdom, God of Grace, but not simply for myself. Amen.
