Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Thought for the Day: The words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. challenge me to rethink how I approach the Christian concept of forgiveness. King wrote, “Forgiveness is not an occasional act; it is a permanent attitude.” I am quick to tell people that forgiveness is a process, and it often takes people a lot of time and therapy to offer forgiveness and let go. I believe that, yet Paul called his followers to live the transformed life that comes by knowing the will of God. Being transformed requires hard work, and it does not wait until a big event and we are unexpectedly challenged to forgive, show grace or love unconditionally. We practice it when it is easy so that the will of God becomes more and more a part of our lives and attitude. Like most of you, I remain a work in progress, but I refuse to allow that to become my excuse. Jesus has called me to live the transformed life for the sake of his kingdom, and I can’t wait and hope that living the transformed life will come naturally. Through worship, study, prayer and practice, the will of God needs to become more and more etched upon my whole life.

Prayer: Encourage me; mentor me; provide me opportunities to practice when failure has few ramifications. I ask this of you, O Spirit of the Living God, for I wish to live the transformed life. Amen.
