Scripture: Luke 13:34
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!
Thought for the Day: As we continue to reflect on the book of Jeremiah, it is good to remember that the Prophets were often respected and revered only after they were gone. Some people are not appreciated in their time, and prophets most definitely fell into that category. Jesus knew quite well what had happened to the prophets who tried to bring the people back to God – these spokespersons of God were mocked, run out of town, beaten and even killed. Jesus will know this experience well himself, for like the prophets, he spoke words that were not heard well by the establishment. In Jeremiah 38, we find the Prophet speaking about the coming of the Babylonian army, and how those who do not surrender will experience great suffering. This was not heard well, and so the people put Jeremiah down in a well. This is better than being stoned, but it still demonstrated how the words of the prophets were not appreciated or taken to heart by most. The last thing you want to hear is that you are living your life in the wrong way and dramatic change will be required, yet the prophets offered their words and insights because they loved both God and the people.
Prayer: Holy God, give me a heart that is willing to hear criticism when it will help me move my life toward faithfulness. I know it won’t be easy, but through your gift of grace, I know real change is possible. Let me accept the prophetic insights when they come. Amen.
