Scripture: John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.
Thought for the Day: I love those words, and the language of this amazing and life-giving Word taking on flesh might just be the most beautiful imagery of poetry ever documented. This Word continues to be alive through the Holy Spirit – the Spirit of Christ that moves and lives among us. When Jesus was leaving his disciples and empowering them to become the body of Christ, he gave them the Holy Spirit. Now let me be perfectly clear, I love the scriptures; I can be a bit geeky around the scriptures; I am the guy who begins studying a piece of scripture for a sermon, only to become intrigued by a word that has me on an hour long tangent that doesn’t have anything to do with the sermon I needed to be preparing. That’s all to say that Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit, not a book. It is the Holy Spirit that brings life to the stories and poetry and imagery of scripture, but I do believe there is a mistake to confuse the two. We are very tangible people, and we like to be able to hold the book in our hands, but I think our eagerness to cling to something has us ignoring the power and free movement of God’s Spirit that is alive with love, hope and mercy. Be open to the Holy Spirit moving among us this day.
Prayer: For your Spirit that was in the beginning, O God, I give you thanks. May the Holy Spirit continue to lead and inspire all that I do. Amen.
