Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

Thought for the Day: As we have seen in recent days, Luke begins his Gospel with a story of one who will help to prepare the way for Jesus’ coming. The Gospel writer of John, on the other hand, is much more philosophical and poetic in his opening words. For his Jewish audience, the language of “In the beginning…” would not have been glossed over or neglected. That is a powerful and ear-catching phrase as it is the opening phrase of Genesis as well. Immediately, people’s ears would have been attentive to a creation story. Something cosmic was about to occur, and the world should have been sitting at the edge of its seat. It’s Advent, and we offer these same words. Are we attentive?

Prayer: O Divine Word, may your church be attentive to the cosmic happenings as a new creation is being birthed. Allow for us to be more than observers – allow for us to be a part of the cosmic event where the community becomes a new creation. Amen.
