Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 1:26-27
In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.”

Thought for the Day: A German philosopher once wrote, “If an angel were to tell us something of his philosophy, I do believe some of his propositions would sound like 2 x 2 = 13.” Mary’s encounter with the angel must have gone against her commonsense, but much of faith requires us to cut loose those things by which we have been living our lives. I’m not talking so much about science and history as I am our preconceived ideas about God, love, forgiveness, relationships and happiness. There is a power that is not of God that continues to try to interpret those ideas in the ways of selfishness. But then an angel appears and turns every preconceived idea on its head. Are you prepared to have your life turned upside down during the remainder of this Advent season?

Prayer: Dear God, I ask for your truth spoken through divine representatives to be given to me gently and in manageable quantities. Otherwise, I’m afraid that I will join so many others who ignore your crazy notions of love and forgiveness. Amen.
