Scripture: John 1:6-9
A man named John was sent from God. He came as a witness to testify concerning the light, so that through him everyone would believe in the light. He himself wasn’t the light, but his mission was to testify concerning the light. The true light that shines on all people was coming into the world.
Thought for the Day: I’m bouncing around a bit these days, but I am hoping to create a larger picture of the time leading to the birth of Jesus. John was the forerunner and envoy that prepared and gave witness to the one who would follow (Jesus). As I suggested yesterday, John’s job couldn’t have been easy. He must have received a lot of attention, yet his job was to redirect that attention elsewhere. The human psyche likes attention, and there are too few people who enjoy stepping from the spotlight. John is an example of someone who understood his position and place in the kingdom. It wasn’t that God saw him as less. God sees a community of diverse people with many gifts, yet each member is loved equally. Whether you have the spiritual gift of prayer, counseling, compassion, healing, wisdom, helping, administration, or one of the many others, they all have the same ultimate purpose. Our gifts are to point others to Jesus Christ. He is the spotlight, and his light shines generously and lovingly upon all people equally.
Prayer: Continue to empower my gifts, O Light of the World. Teach me and show me how best to use these gifts to honor and uplift the Christ Child, the light that shines on all people. Amen.
