Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Isaiah 9:6
For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Thought for the Day: There are days when I need a Wonderful Counselor; other days I need a Mighty God; still others an Everlasting Father; then comes the days I need the Prince of Peace. In the ancient world, most cultures had a multitude of gods. Each one of them was assigned a different task, and each of them had different requirements or even different temples. I can only imagine how complicated it would have been. During this Advent Season, we are once again reminded of our God whose love required nothing – a God who came with no expectations, yet came nonetheless. The fullness of God born in the form of a child and among the most common of settings reinforces the nature and character of a God who is not limited to one task or another, one space or another, one title or another. Emmanuel is more than enough.

Prayer: Whatever my circumstance – whatever my needs or hurts or fears – I believe I can turn to you, O Emmanuel, and find love given without condition; mercy offered without limits; patience that is as long as eternity itself. Thank you, O God who is with us. Amen.
