Scripture: John 2:11
Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
Thought for the Day: Tomorrow, I will be preaching from the 2nd chapter of John’s Gospel. It is the story of Jesus’ first sign that he revealed. Though his disciples had been with him for a time, this becomes a turing point for then. It says, “…and his disciples believed in him.” It sounds dramatic, and it probably would have been, but it doesn’t suggestion anything even close to perfection. These disciples would still question, fail, demonstrate fear, choose unfaithfulness, etc. Reading these words is a good reminder to restate the meaning of the word believe. The word we translate as believe in this and many other passages does not necessarily mean what we think it means. Believing is not an intellectual exercise. The Gospel writer and many other New Testament writers understood believe as a deep-seated conviction – sometimes translated as to belove. It is an overwhelming consciousness that transcends intellectual ideas or emotional feelings, and it requires a tangible response. Let us join the disciples who witnessed the first sign and believed.
Prayer: I believe, Lord, and thus I belove, follow, serve, share, proclaim and do whatever else this amazing conviction calls me to do. Amen.
