Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Psalm 138:7-8
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies; you stretch out your hand, and your right hand delivers me.  The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.

Thought for the Day: Purpose and love are inherently one.  Max was in hospice care when I met him for the first time, and though his body had nearly wasted away, his mind remained sharp.  At his funeral, I described him as the horizontal philosopher.  With every visit, he challenged my thinking and helped me to see things I had never seen before.  During one visit, he talked about his search for his specific purpose in life.  He described a time in his life when he viewed every little happening as a sign or revelation of God’s intended objective for his life.  “I became so focused on my search that I nearly missed my real purpose.”  Max then went on to describe his 45 year love affair with his wife, the raising of their four children, and the addition of two grandchildren.  He said, “My purpose was to love in whatever circumstance I found myself.  Instead, I had been looking for God to lead me to the perfect circumstance where I could love.”  How many of us are waiting for just the right moment, and in our waiting we have missed many good opportunities?

Prayer: O holy and gracious God, you never waited for the perfect moment to love me.  Instead, you chose to love me even when I was at my worst.  Thank you!  Amen.
