Scripture: Matthew 2:19-20
When Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child’s life are dead.”
Thought for the Day: I don’t want to sound too callous, but occasionally there are some good deaths. Herod’s death allowed for the story of redemption to continue, and in our own lives, there are often certain things that need to die for us to participate in the ongoing story of redemption. Whether it is an unhealthy perspective, a deep seeded anger, or a heavy sense of guilt, death is the only way forward…a death to those things that would otherwise keep us in neutral and unable to fully engage the life God is calling us to live. Any death, even the death of something unhealthy, can bring grief. This is normal. But in faith, we shall discover an opportunity to reengage the story so beautifully told in the Gospels.
Prayer: Merciful God, you invite all of us to share in the ongoing story of redemption. Wherever there are obstacles that keep us from full participation, we may seek a good kind of death that shall lead to a fuller experience of life. Amen.
