Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Proverbs 14:16
The wise are cautious and turn away from evil, but the fool throws off restraint and is careless.

Thought for the Day: Yesterday marked the 50th anniversary of a rather well known inaugural address, though its notoriety was not from its poetic style or lofty humanitarian ideals.  It was George Wallace’s 1963 address following his election as Governor of Alabama.  It is best known for the phrase “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.”  Though segregationists loved his unyielding words, he would later backdown from that statement saying, “I was wrong. Those days are over, and they ought to be over.”  The change supposedly came, in part, through faith.  Such confession is admirable, but there is a good lesson to be learned as Wallace backed away from his absolutism.  God desires us to have strong convictions, but if your convictions are hateful to the core, they’re not from God…and at some point you’ll probably be eating those words.  I had a professor long ago who said, “It is better to sin on the side of love.  Even if you’re wrong, you’re still doing right.”  Be cautious in regard to absolutes, especially when they promote the exclusion of anyone.  You may continue to uphold that exclusionary belief, but if you do, you ought to get started on an apology note now.  It will be needed at some point, though Wallace would have never imagined such a day in 1963.

Prayer: Give me a cautious spirit, O God, when it comes to making grand statements that may sound religious but do not promote love.  I’d rather make an unpopular stand today then to be apologizing later.  Amen.
