Scripture: Genesis 1:11-13
Then God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.
Thought for the Day: Werner Heisenberg was a pioneer in Quantum Mechanics, yet this great scientific mind said, “The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will make you an atheist, but at the bottom of the glass God is waiting for you.” Despite the opinions of many, science and religion are not enemies. They are complimentary paths of discovery, though how they express their discoveries is most often different. These differences do not mean one is wrong or even in conflict with the other. Religion uses story, dance, poetry, song, painting and metaphor to communicate experiential truths that are not easily expressed in the language of science. As the first creation account in Genesis would suggest, plants came before the animals. Most scientists would agree that algae and other similar plants existed millions of years before animals, but communicating the order was not the purpose of Genesis. The opening chapter is a magnificent poem with a heartbeat like rhythm to the form and structure. Its cadence brings the readers around each time and reintroduces them to the goodness of God that is revealed in every layer of the creation.
Prayer: With every breath and heartbeat, O God of Creation, I desire to be drawn into your beautiful and life-giving revelation. Amen.
