Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Psalm 46:1-3
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.

Thought for the Day: So many of Dr. King’s words are relevant far beyond their context within the Civil Rights Movement.  King once wrote, “We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear.”  He is absolutely correct, but the struggle we face is going from the conceptional drawings to its actual construction within our spiritual and emotional lives.  What can you do to restrain fear?  How might God as our refuge and strength be this barricade that holds fear at bay?  Let me suggest one part of the final product is being honest with supportive people about those things that cause us fear.  Facing fear within community gives a pretty good framework for the dike referenced by Dr. King.

Prayer: If I am to live as you would have me live, Merciful God, I must work on containing my fears that if left unchecked will govern my life in unhealthy ways.  Assist me as I work to strengthen a living levee of support and love.  Amen.
