Scripture: John 1:38-40
When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
Thought for the Day: Three of the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark and John) refer to Jesus as a Rabbi. The word describes a teacher, but it was a title of great respect. Those who followed Jesus understood him, first, as one who would instruct them in right-living. Though in this passage, the author alludes to the idea that people were looking for something — seeking, yearning, desiring. In Jesus, they heard something that was so unique that they were willing to drop everything. The usual, the everyday ordinary, is not going to inspire anyone to risk much of anything. As you think about the teachings of Jesus, what is it that you find distinctive and worthy of risk?
Prayer: Like the disciples of old, I desire to know you and learn from you, O Lord. May the yearning I feel never get lost in the busyness of life. Amen.
