Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Mark 9:2-3
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them.

Thought for the Day: Significant things happen when people visit the mountain top.  Three disciples joined Jesus on a journey to the summit (what’s called the Mountain of Transfiguration), but what they knew of Jesus was broadened because they were willing to make the trip.  Too many people walk in the valley assuming they have Jesus pretty much figured out, and so invitations to go to the mountain are declined.  But even those who walked daily with Jesus for a couple of years were wowed by what they glimpsed on the mountain.  The valley is safe and predictable, and too often faithful people postpone their excursions because they cannot imagine anything novel being revealed.  Don’t get me wrong, the valley  is important.  It is where we live and serve, but time on the mountain expands our capacity to do that living and serving in more faithful ways.

Prayer: O Holy Guide, on this Transfiguration Sunday, lead me to those lofty places where I can more fully appreciate the relationship I have with you – lead me to those lofty places that will inspire me to live more faithful in the valley. Amen.
