Scripture: Proverbs 12:17
Whoever speaks the truth gives honest evidence, but a false witness speaks deceitfully.
Thought for the Day: Dr. Mark Whitten – a member of Cypress Creek Christian Church and a Professor at Lone Star College – led a four week study on Islam. It was nothing short of brilliant. Mark is not only an exceptional teacher, but there is this clear joy in the act of communicating knowledge. I’m glad I was able to attend. I raise this in light of a couple of conversations over the last week, conversations that stemmed from Forwarded Emails or Facebook Posts. In many cases, it is clear that the individuals chose to forward based upon the subject line, the image/cartoon or a one sentence summary. In so many cases, what is being forwarded does not actually support what people think they are supporting. And even if it does, there was no taking into account the source or the skilled editing that was used to make it appear as if someone said something they did not actually say. In two recent conversations about Islam, I was told to “not get so uptight. Sure, it may not be accurate, but the desired result is what we seek.” These are Christian people who are suggesting that the end justifies the means, yet the end in so many cases is fiction based upon a foundation of fabrications and outright lies. I’ve said this before in recent devotionals, but I will say it again – we as Christians must be seekers of the truth even when it means our opinions lose a little of their strength or we must outright apologize for perpetuating misinformation. It also requires us to do unbiased research before we click Forward or Share.
Prayer: Let me be a truth-teller, O Source of Life, even when I’d rather spin something to justify my thinking. Amen.
