Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Colossians 4:6 (the Message)
Be gracious in your speech. The goal is to bring out the best in others in a conversation, not put them down, not cut them out.

Thought for the Day: The writer and philosopher, Elbert Hubbard, offered some helpful insight on friendship when he wrote, “A friend is one who knows you and loves you just the same.”  I think most of us go along each day without much thought to our friendships.  We make great assumptions, almost giving the impression that it must be a real privilege to be ‘my friend’.  But then the moment comes when we are reminded of our own imperfections or quirkiness, and the friend is still there.  Those are the moments when we get a little weak in the knees as we find ourselves humbled by the idea of genuine friendship.  I love the way Aristotle described friendship as “…a single soul dwelling in two bodies.”  In respect for the marvelous gift of friendship, let us be gracious in our words, doing what we can to bring out the best from the other who loves us despite all our flaws.

Prayer: I give you thanks, O Lord, for the friends I have known in this life.  They are gifts from you.  Amen.
