Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Mark 10:17-18
As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.”

Thought for the Day: In his book, “If the Church were Christian,” Philip Gulley raises the question, “Was the goal of Jesus to convince people he was divine?  Did he want to establish a new religion whose chief purpose was adoration?” (p. 19).  I think Phil raises a critical question for the church today.  Jesus quite often distanced himself from the idea of divinity.  Has the church spent unfathomable amounts of money and time to worship Jesus when in fact he only wanted us to do as he was doing?  Which is easier: To worship Jesus or live the life he showed?  I think worship still has its place, but I don’t believe it should ever overshadow the good work of healing, redemption and transformation.

Prayer: Holy One, may the prayer and praise of my lips turn to compassionate works with my hands and other resources.  Amen.

  1. Well said Bruce. I’ve been trying to say that for years, but I’m made to feel like a heretic. I think Jesus wanted to set us on the right path to God. He was telling us that God is a God of love and not a god that required us to spend our time worrying about rules and sacrifices. That God is a God of compassion and Grace to all. I often wonder if Jesus is appalled at how much time we spend worshipping Him and not God. Of course my Pastor daughter tells me I’m an adoptionist !! Perhaps we can talk about it sometime and see if you can set this heretic straight[?] Happy Valentine’s Day[?] Hope the backs better? Love Isobel
