Scripture: Romans 13:9
The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet”; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Thought for the Day: I have mentioned Thomas Merton a couple of times recently, and originally I planned to use the following quote in yesterday’s sermon. In the end, it was edited out…but it was too good to be forgotten. Merton wrote,
Our job is to love others without stopping to inquire whether or not they are worthy. That is not our business and, in fact, it is nobody’s business. What we are asked to do is to love, and this love itself will render both ourselves and our neighbors worthy.
Let’s be honest—what Merton is suggesting is tough stuff. Yet how much better would the world around me be if I spent more of my time loving and less time criticizing? How much healthier would I be if I did so?
Prayer: It is good to hear the opinions of everyone, but at the end of the day, sharing love would be a much better use of our time and energy. Help me, Lord, to be less concerned about seeing my personal thoughts expressed -and- more passionate about expressing love to all those around me. Amen.
