Scripture: Ezekiel 34:2-5
Mortal, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel: prophesy, and say to them—to the shepherds: Thus says the Lord God: Ah, you shepherds of Israel who have been feeding yourselves! Should not shepherds feed the sheep? You eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool, you slaughter the fatlings; but you do not feed the sheep. You have not strengthened the weak, you have not healed the sick, you have not bound up the injured, you have not brought back the strayed, you have not sought the lost, but with force and harshness you have ruled them. So they were scattered, because there was no shepherd; and scattered, they became food for all the wild animals.
Thought for the Day: We often speak of God as the great shepherd, yet for the Prophet Ezekiel, the shepherds were the leaders of the community. These shepherds had become very self-serving, entirely neglecting the needs of the poor and weak. Without any high ethical example, the people were ‘scattered’ because there was no one to guide them. Justice-making, acts of compassion, and service to others can draw a fractured community back together as it provides meaning and purpose. All it takes is someone to step forward and be the shepherd who shows the way.
Prayer: Be the divine shepherd to all of us, O God, and then call forth those who will guide us in the ways of faithful-living. Amen.
