Scripture: Philippians 3:20
Our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ
Thought for the Day: About 10 years ago, I had the privilege of witnessing a swearing-in ceremony for a young woman receiving American citizenship. I consider myself a fairly patriotic person, but I cannot remember another time when I was moved with such patriotic pride as I was that afternoon. Here was a group of individuals, some of them who had fled nations because they feared for their lives, who were making the final step toward equal partnership and responsibility as United States citizens. As one who was born into my citizenship, I can too often under-appreciate what it means. The Apostle Paul reminds his readers that they are first and foremost citizens of heaven, yet too often people under-appreciate what that truly means. They wear the t-shirt expressing Christian loyalty and are always big celebrants on the important days of remembrance. But do they truly value and live out what it means to say, “I am a citizen of heaven”?
Prayer: O Heavenly Father, in a world of mixed allegiances, may I always strive to put you and your kingdom first. Amen.
