Monday of Holy Week – John 13:1, 18-20
Jesus foretells his Betrayal
Scripture: John 13:1, 14-20
Before the Festival of Passover, Jesus knew that his time had come to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them fully…[Jesus said,] “I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you too must wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example: Just as I have done, you also must do. I assure you, servants aren’t greater than their master, nor are those who are sent greater than the one who sent them. Since you know these things, you will be happy if you do them. I’m not speaking about all of you. I know those whom I’ve chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture, ‘The one who eats my bread has turned against me.’ I’m telling you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I Am. I assure you that whoever receives someone I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
Thought for the Day: “I have given you an example…” Those words have continued to speak to me during this Lenten season. Jesus never asked us to worship him, and though I believe we should, we should probably focus more of our attention on what he asked us to do – and of course, that would be to serve with humility and love. Not only did he set out this model, but he provided us great examples throughout his ministry of what it meant to love God and love others. Too often we have focused our attention on the aspect of worship, but the whole Christian experience has too often become contained within a specific hour and specific sanctuary. Jesus challenged us to follow his example, but in the above passage, he also provides an uncomfortable warning about those who will turn against the acts of love and humble service. As we move into this Holy Week in the life of the church, let us be very mindful of the example Jesus provided, and as we choose to follow his way, let us also be mindful that his betrayal got him killed. Those who follow the radical life of Jesus Christ are pretty much guaranteed to be avoided, ostracized or even hated. Just remember, you are in good company.
Prayer: Let me see clearly your invitation to follow, O Lord, and may each day provide opportunities for growth in my ability to live as Jesus did. I may not be ready to die for my faith, but I yearn to push the limits of love and forgiveness and service. Amen.
