Tuesday of Holy Week
Judas and the bread
Scripture: John 13:30
So, after receiving the piece of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.
Thought for the Day: This is a troubling moment in the story as Judas exits the stage as the antagonist. It feels as if you can hear some hissing from the crowd. Yet I am fascinated how John’s Gospel makes it clear that Judas takes bread before leaving, but even more intriguing is the language of “And it was night.” It was the Passover meal, and though Judas would have been walking in the night, there would have been light from the full paschal moon shining. Both the reference to the bread and the language of the night provide a strange hope to the story. Even this individual, who truly has become a caricature of evil within Christian history, is allowed to participate in the meal of Christ and still walk under the light. During this Holy Week, there are many opportunities for us to do some self-reflection, and if we are honest, we can name a few Judas characteristics within our own lives. Whatever his motive, he probably wasn’t evil. Misguided and confused – yes. Trying to push his own version of God’s hope for the world – also, yes. We are probably equally guilty, yet I’ve got to believe that even at our worst moments, the Bread of Life is offered. And no matter how dark the night, the light still shines upon us.
Prayer: Though I may view my self separated or even lost in relationship to you, O Gracious Father, I continue to believe in your unconditional love that will neither reject me or allow me to walk in the darkness alone. Thank you! Amen.
