Scripture: Proverbs 11:3
The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.
Thought for the Day: I have been deeply distressed over the resume discrepancy of Manhattan’s basketball coach, Steve Masiello. A few weeks back, he was one of the rising stars in college basketball. It looked as if he’d be the next coach at South Florida, with an incredibly large paycheck. But in South Florida’s background check, it was discovered that Coach Masiello had never actually graduated from college. It will be interesting to see how this plays itself out in the next month or so, especially for a man who constantly preached to his players the importance of integrity. With that said, maybe my disappointment shouldn’t be cast on Coach Masiello alone. In 42 of the 50 states in our country, the highest paid state employee is a basketball or football coach. Now I love college sports, but maybe our passion for collegiate athletics has blinded us to questions of the system’s integrity. Why are we not calling into question a system that pays a man 16 times more to teach a group of young men how to throw a ball then it pays the head of the medical research department. I’m not ready to let Coach Masiello off the hook, but crookedness can also be systemic. And when a problem is systemic, we all need to ask how we are participating in perpetuating its existence.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I not only desire to be a person of integrity, but to participate in creating communities of great integrity. Amen.
