Scripture: Psalm 88:14
O Lord, why do you cast me off? Why do you hide your face from me?
Thought for the Day: A colleague of mine posted the following quote from Rob Bell, one of my favorite authors:
…faith and doubt aren’t opposites. Doubt is often a sign that your faith has a pulse, that it’s alive and well and exploring and searching.
There are a growing number of highly committed, deeply spiritual, people who are asking tough questions about faith, the Bible and the nature of God. Many of these people are now standing on the outside of the church looking in because they were often belittled, if not demonized, for their probing questions. Just to be honest, these are the folks with whom I’d rather sit around and talk theology and faith and ethics. Would they challenge me? Yes! Would they cause some doubt to resinate within my heart. Most definitely! Rob Bell is correct when he liberates doubt from the confines of sin. Many people who claim to have no doubts have allowed their faith to be lulled into a deep sleep, if not a spiritual coma. It may appear to be contentment, but the body lying in state at the funeral home looks peaceful as well…but its peaceful only because its dead.
Prayer: Growth comes through challenge – and with some hesitancy, I ask that you push me, Lord, into the reality of life where very few things are clearly black or white. There, where the deepest longings and most profound questions exist, I hope to discover you anew, O Source of My Being. Amen.
