Scripture: Psalm 119:37
Turn my eyes from looking at vanities; give me life in your ways.
Thought for the Day: In his book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey puts forth the proposition that “most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important.” When we look at our lives, crisis (or what describes itself as crisis, but really is not) draws our attention and maintains that attention at the expense of what should be our priorities. Too often, we put aside those things to which we truly feel called because another calamity is at hand. Running from emergency to emergency makes one look busy and feel exhausted, but in the end, the tasks of life that provide meaning and those that will bring about real change in the world are left untouched. I was once told that the powers that seek to keep things as they are will create unnecessary crisis, for in doing so, this pointless busyness keeps the world distracted just long enough to never do the real work of change.
Prayer: Help me to always respond to real crisis, O Compassionate God, yet let me never get lost in the so-called calamities that only seek to distract me from the real work of life. Amen.
