Scripture: Psalm 23:1
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
Thought for the Day: Yes, this is the same scripture as yesterday. In that devotional, I focused entirely on the notion of the shepherd, and the relationship between the shepherd and the flock. This is, in the minds of most people, the central idea of the passage, yet notice the interesting connection between the declaration of faith: The Lord is my shepherd and the following line: I shall not want. It assumes a cause and an effect, a belief and a response. If the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. How many people do you know that would say that the Lord is their shepherd, but they have plenty of wants. These are not the necessities of life, but the yearnings for the irrelevant and the meaningless (most of the stuff folks are trying to sell us on TV). I do not want to speak for you, so I will simply say that I still struggle with covetous distractions and greedy wants that demonstrate a need to still grow in my understanding of it means to declare, The Lord is my shepherd!
Prayer: O Lord, you are my shepherd and I seek your help in distancing myself from those things I really do not need. Let me seek you above all those irrelevant wants. Amen.
