Scripture: Isaiah 44:21
Remember these things, O Jacob, and Israel, for you are my servant; I formed you, you are my servant; O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me.
Thought for the Day: Yesterday, Jan wrote beautifully about the importance of waiting. Shortly after rereading her words some time around 1:30pm, I glanced at a news feed about the US government correcting an “oversight” that occurred, in some cases, more than 50 years ago. Twenty-four Army veterans were given the Medal of Honor, the country’s highest military award. Of those recognized, ten of them never came home and one of the soldiers was never recovered. Others have died since their service, but three were present yesterday afternoon to receive their recognition from President Obama. These were soldiers, who because of their ethnicity, were overlooked when it came to this award. In 2002, a Congressional Act was passed to ensure those deserving the Medal of Honor were not denied because of prejudice. Family members, friends and soldiers themselves had to wait a long time, yet Dr. King was correct when he said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” Society can be slow, even moving backwards at times. Yet the snail like pace of human action toward righteousness and justice does not leave God disillusioned. For too many deserving soldiers, their wait was far too long. Through confession of past sins and acts of repentance, it is possible for human beings to join God in bending the arc of the universe more fully toward justice for all people. We often speak of waiting for God, but how often is God waiting for us? Thank God… that God is patient.
Prayer: You have taught me, O Lord, how waiting and patience can be very important attributes along the journey of faith. At the same time, keep me aware so that I won’t keep you waiting when the time to act has come. Amen.
