Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: John 3:1-2
Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews.  He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.”

Thought for the Day: The exchange between Nicodemus and Jesus is one of the most intriguing parts of scripture.  If read carefully, the conversation reveals the genuine heart of one who is seeking the truth.  Reading beyond these verses, there are times when Nicodemus sounds a bit stubborn or agitated, but I think it comes from a heartfelt longing to appreciate what he cannot yet apprehend.  He comes to Jesus under the cover of darkness, for he is still early in this process of discovery.  It reminds me of many who I have met over the years.  Some visitors to church are very comfortable in a sanctuary, but others walk in as if the space was a field of landmines.  They walk gingerly, always pondering whether or not to turn and run.  The hunger to know God is often matched or even eclipsed by people’s fear of religion and church.  That’s the reason many people describe themselves as believing in God, but they are not church attendees.  Let us show to our visitors the gracious understanding Jesus demonstrated toward Nicodemus.

Prayer: For all who yearn to know you, O Lord, may I demonstrate the gentle compassion of a friend.  Amen.
