Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 2nd Chronicles 2:4
I am now about to build a house for the name of the Lord my God and dedicate it to him for offering fragrant incense before him, and for the regular offering of the rows of bread, and for burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths and the new moons and the appointed festivals of the Lord our God, as ordained forever for Israel.

Thought for the Day: It is May Day, yet what I have come to learn is that the words May Day mean different things for different people. Growing-up, we delivered baskets on May Day. Some were placed on the porch of neighbors or friends, others were taken to shut-ins and the hospitalized. This is a forgotten tradition in most places as is the association of May Day with a workers protest for an 8-hour workday. Though in some settings, it is still honored as International Workers’ Day. In other places, it is associated with Celtic festivals of spring – which might include a bonfire or a dance around the Maypole. And for our Catholic brothers and sisters, May Day is a day to honor Mary, the mother of Jesus. Statues of the Virgin Mary are decorated with fresh spring flowers.  It is just another day on the calendar, yet so many seemingly unrelated celebrations are focused upon this day. In whatever manner you choose to celebrate this day, may it be dedicated to the Lord our God who enjoys the joy-filled celebrations of humanity.

Prayer: Let my joyful words and celebrative spirit honor you, my Lord and my God. Amen.

  1. In Scotland, girls were supposed to go out early and wash their face in the dew to ensure beauty. ( I guess I missed that one!) Another old superstition for May Day was for girls to go look in the lake, there they would see their future husband behind them. I have no idea how these things originate.
