Scripture: Psalm 102:18-22
Let this be recorded for a generation to come, so that a people yet unborn may praise the Lord: that he looked down from his holy height, from heaven the Lord looked at the earth, to hear the groans of the prisoners, to set free those who were doomed to die; so that the name of the Lord may be declared in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem, when peoples gather together, and kingdoms, to worship the Lord.
Thought for the Day: It is good to gather together in larger communities to give thanks for the redemptive work of God. We should offer thanksgiving regularly in our personal prayers and in weekly worship, but occasionally it is important and spiritually elevating to assemble with a larger body of believers for prayer and praise. This past Sunday afternoon, many from Cypress Creek Christian Church joined sisters and brothers from the Coastal Plains Area of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). First Christian Church of Beaumont, Texas, was our gracious host. Those gatherings are always a blessing in my life, but they also draw my attention out of my own narrow perspective. During a couple of short conversations with members of other churches, I heard stories of faithfulness and hope, uncertainty and pessimism. I preferred the optimistic words, but I appreciated the honest struggles of those trying to think about faithfulness within their context. I told two separate people that I would be praying for their congregations, and this morning, I did just that…and will again. And as they walked away, they assured me that Cypress Creek Christian Church would be in their prayers. It is a beautiful thing when God’s people come together.
Prayer: I know you celebrate my thankful praise, O Lord, but I imagine your enjoyment is doubled when you see larger and more diverse bodies of believers gathering together. Continue to encourage us – young and old, men and women – to find settings where our voices can join with new friends in honoring you. Amen.
