Scripture: 1st Peter 2:1-3
Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
Thought for the Day: We have a hymn in our Chalice Hymnal entitled, “All Who Hunger Gather Gladly”. There is a line that reads, “Taste and see the grace eternal. Taste and see that God is good.” It wasn’t long ago when I was questioned after worship about that line. “What does it mean to taste and see that God is good?” I was caught off guard, though I responded, “I’m pretty sure it is in scripture.” In this case, I was correct; though I wouldn’t have guessed 1st Peter. The line in 1st Peter is actually a quote from Psalm 34 where the word of the Lord is upon the lips of the Psalmist. In Psalm 119, the word of the Lord is sweet to the writer’s taste, sweeter than honey. The hope is that the word of the Lord has been upon our lips and within our mouths, and thus we have tasted the goodness of God. And then when that word is spoken, it is life-giving to others. That is when we are allowed to witness the goodness of the Lord as others find themselves tasting the sweetness themselves.
Prayer: Let me taste and see that you, O Lord, are good! Amen.
