Scripture: 1st Peter 2:4-5
Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Thought for the Day: There are times when I find myself saying, “Oh, that’s one of my favorite verses in scripture”, which is the same thing I had said two days earlier about another passage, and a week before that on another passage. It’s like having a favorite passage of the week club. I’m not suggesting that’s a bad thing, but I offer it as a preface to the fact that this passage from 1st Peter might be one of my favorites.
The very first word – come – is the way we translate a wonderful word that is used in the LXX to describe the approach (often a priest) people made into the presence of God. We are to approach God like living stones. We do so, because we are to resemble Christ who was the corner stone, and then we are to build upon what he has done. By coming before God, we are putting ourselves in the hands of the Master Builder (word built in this passage is a passive verb) who will guide us into the places where our lives can best serve the spiritual house. It is time to move from the quarry to the place where the Builder can use us. Come to him, a living stone…
Prayer: Lord, we hear your invitation to come. Give us the strength to get up and go before you as living stones. Amen.
