Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture:  1st Corinthians 16:8-9
But I will stay in Ephesus until Pentecost, for a wide door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.

Thought for the Day: The 17th century English poet, Abraham Cowley, once wrote, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”  Now I truly believe some people, because of circumstance, race, economics, etc., have more opportunities than others.  Yet within the Christian life, I believe that God is attempting to create opportunities (doors that are opened wide) of ministry for every person.  Though like Cowley’s comment, the divine doors of opportunity often appear risky, different or unconventional.  They demand more of us than we are willing to give.  So instead of choosing the prospect that is saturated with possibility, we choose the threshold that provides contentment and security.  The Apostle Paul finds himself in the city of Ephesus where he sees a door of opportunity, yet with that door comes adversaries.  I’m sure there were many other doors that looked uncomplicated and undemanding, but the discerning heart of Paul recognized that they didn’t hold the same potential.

Prayer: With faith and trust, O God of hope, I turn the knob on an unfamiliar door.  Amen.
