Scripture: 1st Corinthians 3:4-7
For when one says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not merely human? What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.
Thought for the Day: My friend Dale Meyer suggested that the following quote from Stacy L. Sanchez could preach:
We aren’t called to be like other Christians;
we are called to be like Christ…
In fact, Dale indicated that this quote might be all that was needed for a sermon. I’m pretty sure there would be few complaints if I stood before the congregation next Sunday, offered this quote, and then sat down. Worship done in 40 minutes rarely has too much criticism.
Now don’t get me wrong, the example of other Christians is never a bad thing. In fact, the life witness of other Christians is were we receive our best teaching. But at the end of the day, we are called to follow Jesus and not our teachers. Most Christian educators do not seek a personal following. Their greatest hope is to have their words and actions point to Christ and his magnificent life of love.
Prayer: Provide me humble teachers, O Merciful God, whose life purpose is to bring the life of Christ into focus for everyone. Amen.
