Scripture: Proverb 25:11
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.
Thought for the Day: Recently, my Spam Filter has been a bit overly aggressive, exiling a few important emails to the shadowy fringes of digital communication. Included among the banished has been emails from Stephanie Hickman, our Director of Contemporary Music. Any banishment is of concern, but Stephanie’s communications are essential if Sunday morning’s 9:30 service is to go smoothly. In an email to Stephanie, I suggested that she text me if she has not received a response within a short period of time, and then I would go fishing in the mire of discarded electronic garbage for the wanted piece of mail.
In today’s world, our ability to communicate is nothing short of amazing. At the same time, with every new means of exchanging information, there are new ways of interrupting, misdirecting or incorrectly interpreting the intended message. The above Proverb speaks of a “word fitly spoken…” The Hebrew word we translate as fitly is ‘owphan, the word for a chariot wheel. The attempted communication referenced in the Proverb is coming with an ease and speed not previously seen, like something riding on the wheels of a chariot. And the beauty of this communication is like a well crafted piece of jewelry. To achieve this high level of successful discourse requires intention and attention.
Prayer: For the sake of creating the kind of relationships that you desire, O Lord of Life, provide me the needed tools to communicate in such a way that I understand and am understood. Amen.
