Scripture: Genesis 11:7-9
[The Lord said,] “Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.
Thought for the Day: Tomorrow is Pentecost Sunday, the birthday of the church. It is one of my favorite church celebrations, in part, because it has not been commercialized. It is a fun celebrational Sunday (don’t forget to wear red). According to the Book of Acts, on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon the people – a diverse group of people in regard to their languages – yet they understood one another as if each was speaking in a common language. The Pentecost story is a reversal the Babel story from Genesis 11. Humanity’s sinful desire to become like God through the building of a tower only left them more divided and isolated, yet the Spirit found a way of bringing humanity back together around a common vision of unconditional love. God has a wonderful way of reversing unhealthy stories that have defined us for far too long.
Prayer: Provide me new life-giving stories, O Lord, so that such stories may help to shape my current and future life story. Amen.
