Scripture: Psalm 25:22
Redeem Israel, O God, out of all its troubles.
Thought for the Day: The Bible’s original languages do not really have a word that we easily translate as luck, though another translation of the Bible renders the above verse as “God, give your people a break from this run of bad luck.” Yesterday was Friday the 13th, and for many superstitious people, it was a day for trepidation. Is there such things a good luck and back luck? The plea in the Psalm reveals one of the great theological questions: What is God’s relationship to the good and bad things in life? Is God the cause? Is God a passive observer as the world deals us a hand to play? Or, is it some of both? I’m not going to suggest an answer to that question as every respected theologian in Christian history has given his/her opinion, and there is very little consensus. With that said, there appears to be a yearning to turn to God in times of trouble—believing that we shall not be left alone in our difficulty.
Prayer: Though I may not understand the finer points of how you work in the world, O God, I pray to you when difficulty comes my way. I do so believing – that together – we shall see a better day. Amen.
