Scripture: Colossians 4:2-4
Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with thanksgiving. At the same time pray for us as well that God will open to us a door for the word, that we may declare the mystery of Christ, for which I am in prison, so that I may reveal it clearly, as I should.
Thought for the Day: Today is Trinity Sunday (and Father’s Day), the Sunday after Pentecost in which the church names this complex mystery that we refer to as the Trinity. For Paul whose life was completely turned upside down by his Damascus Road vision, the notion of Christ was a mystery. The word for mystery in the Greek is musteiron, and its root is muo which means to shut your mouth. Though Paul will spend the remainder of his life telling the world about Christ, there remained something that was still beyond description. At some point, we should shut our mouths, stop trying to explain, and just experience. Or as a preacher once put it, “We know the divine in a way that cannot be explained. So, instead of making a fool of ourselves trying to do so, we need to close our mouths and begin the real work of following in the ways of this mysterious gift of love.”
Prayer: O Holy Mystery, your presence entered this world in the form of the Christ. His love was rejected by many, yet we’ve chosen to take up his example so that others my glimpse the joyous mystery which is you. Amen.
