Scripture: Isaiah 58:7
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?
Thought for the Day: By the time you read this, I will be finishing up a night here at the church working with IHN (Interfaith Hospitality Network). Those transitioning out of homelessness are given shelter, food and opportunities. It is an amazing program, and I am overjoyed by Cypress Creek’s willingness to bring the homeless into our house. The Prophet Isaiah was challenging the people to be spiritually prudent and not stumble into hypocrisy. Actually, the people had already more than stumbled. They had fallen into a sanctimonious attitude that had them overlooking the real needs of sisters and brothers. Acts of veneration and devotion are not bad. In fact, they are necessary in the life of faith. But these acts of worship and spiritual growth should never be viewed as the pinnacle of faith, but the process by which we grow in our love of God and our willingness to serve God through service to others.
Prayer: We are grateful for the many ways you have given us to grow in faith, O Lord God. Whether it is this prayer, a time of worship or another spiritual discipline, allow it to be a tool by which we grow in our ability to be more Christ-like. Amen.
