Scripture: Psalm 18:6
In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears.
Thought for the Day: I remember using this Psalm with a class of young children. A week later one of the children brought me a picture based upon her reflections. It depicted a rather generic figure sitting on a lavish throne. There was nothing distinctive about the person except for the size of the ears. They looked more like elephant ears, 3 to 4 times the size of the head. She explained how God’s ears must be large to perceive our cries. “There are some people who can cry really loud like my little sister,” she told me, “but most people’s sadness is just a little whimper. It is good to know that God’s ears will hear even those cries.” Though I don’t believe God literally has ears, I believe both the Psalmist and the little girl were artistically expressing the very important ideas of God’s compassion and awareness. For even when our pain finds no verbal expression at all, it does not escape the senses of God.
Prayer: I praise you, O Loving Lord, for how you are constantly aware of my anguish and willing to respond to it with mercy and kindness. Amen.
