Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 2nd Corinthians 12:9
…but the Lord said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.”  So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

Thought for the Day: The comedian, Steve Martin, tried to show how hard it is to play a sad song on the banjo.  There is something about the tone and brightness of the instrument that took Martin’s sarcastically sad lyrics and turned them into toe-tapping happiness.  This may sound just a bit goofy, but the Jesus story is like a banjo accompanying our life story.  The actual words of the story may sound very tragic, but in time, the melody behind it changes the mood and ultimately supersedes all that is negative and hurtful.  It’s hard to sing a sad song to a banjo, and it is equally hard to keep on telling our own sad story with the accompaniment of divine grace and mercy playing alongside us.  God desires for us to know healing and wholeness, and God’s song is persistent and always welcoming.

Prayer: Kind and Generous God, your song draws me into a realm where the hurts of life find healing.  Thank you for continuing to play your inviting song even when I’m not ready to hear it.  Amen.
