Scripture: Revelation 13:10
If you are to be taken captive, into captivity you go; if you kill with the sword, with the sword you must be killed. Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints.
Thought for the Day: The book of Revelation is a unique piece of literature. It is called Apocalyptic literature, which literally means to unveil. In a time of persecution, the author wrote to his beloved churches to encourage them and unveil where God was at work. Using mysterious and often bizarre metaphors and images, the author reinterprets first century existence for his Christian readers who would have clearly understood the symbolism. It would have been of great hope and strength to these persecuted communities of faith. In this verse, the author called upon his audience to respond to violence with something other than violence. It is not easy, but one source of strength is the saints who provide for us a witness to true faithfulness amidst difficulty. Part of the church’s witness is to tell the stories of the faithful, and in the telling of those stories, we find creative and authentic ways of living over and against the reality that the world is attempting to create.
Prayer: O Lord, you inspired so many throughout the centuries. May their lives continue to inspire and teach me. Amen.
