Scripture: Matthew 11:29
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Thought for the Day: On this day in 1612, nine women and two men were found guilty and executed for being witches. This was part of what would be called: The Pendle Witch Trials in Lancashire, England. Though some of these individuals were probably healers of sort who believed they had the capacity to use magic, the accusations had their origin in a bitter rivalry between two families. The church not only created the environment for such accusations to be made, but it encouraged the swift execution of those found guilty of any form of witchcraft…even when the facts were a bit sketchy. The church was easily threatened, and it responded out of fear.
The church has been at its absolute worst when it has sought absolute power in response to its own fears. In such times, the church lost sight of its mission to resemble the Jesus of scripture who was gentle and humble. On the other hand, there have been moments when the church has chosen the path of self-sacrificing love. In choosing to empty itself of power, it found its greatest strength and witnessed its most dramatic impact upon the world.
Prayer: God, continue to put before me and the church the model of Jesus who chose the uncommon path to power through humility and gentleness. Amen.
