Scripture: 2nd Timothy 1:6-7
For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.
Thought for the Day: In the original Greek, the word for ‘self-discipline‘ comes from sophronizo, which means to discipline, moderate or curb. To rekindle the gifts within us, takes hard and self-sacrificing discipline. A spirit of cowardice will not suffice. Earlier, my family and I made a trip to Splash Town, the water park. Zach and Donna wore water shoes the entire time, but I didn’t have any. Let me say, my feet are sore. That’s because I rarely walk barefoot. As a kid, I could have walked on rocks and sticks and never known it, but that’s because I was barefoot 90% of the time. I disciplined my feet, and it changed what I was capable of doing. If we want to modify our ability to set these gifts loose upon the world, then we cannot be afraid to do the hard work associated with practicing the spiritual disciplines.
Prayer: In the belief that I could do even greater things through the discipline of self, I step forward to rekindle your gifts that reside within me, O Loving Lord. Amen.
