Scripture: Matthew 9:37
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few…”
Thought for the Day: Us Christians toss around the word disciple as if we all have a common and clear definition. You may be surprised to hear me say that I do not believe we have a common or clear definition of this word, especially as it relates to being a disciple of Jesus Christ. I’m not suggesting there is a single definition to which everyone will agree, but I find that many Christians understand discipleship as a prize, not a responsibility. Discipleship, the daily choice one makes to follow in the sacrificial ways of Jesus, is what makes one a disciple. It is found in the tension between being and becoming. Take a moment to reflect on what that might mean within your own life. What does it suggest to be a follower of Jesus, the gracious one who gave it all away?
Prayer: Lord God, I wish to be a disciple. Not for what I might receive, for that gift has already been receive. Instead, point me to where I can best assist you in bringing alive your unconditional love – the gift so beautifully displayed in Jesus. Amen.
